Glossary

Trade terms, in plain English

The words you hear in the business — what they actually mean.

The cost of cutting and stitching a garment — your factory’s making charge, before fabric, trims and margin are added.

“Free on board” — the price you charge the buyer with the goods delivered to the ship. Your margin is usually worked out on this price.

The full list of everything needed to make the order — fabric, trims, thread — with quantities, including wastage.

The day cutting should begin to ship on time. In Flint it’s set 40 days before the ex-factory date.

The milestone calendar for an order — fabric in-house, sampling, cutting, shipping — counted back from the ship date.

A standard way of inspecting a sample from each lot and deciding accept or reject, based on how many defects are allowed.

How many defects were found per 100 pieces checked. Lower is better.

The share of pieces that passed inspection without any rework. Higher is better.

The quarterly GST summary of goods you sent out to job workers (like fabricators) and received back.

A yearly undertaking that lets you export without paying IGST upfront. It expires — so its renewal date matters.

The membership certificate exporters hold with their export promotion council. Also has an expiry to watch.

A way of valuing stock: each new purchase blends into an average rate, so your stock value stays fair and steady.
